Staff writer Cayla Vaughan The smell of buttered popcorn filled the lobby. We sloshed through the crowd to buy our tickets for the movie. The movie every comic-book fan has been dying to see. “Logan.” At first I was hesitant about seeing “Logan.” I was never a huge sci-fi fan, nor did I really enjoy watching superhero movies. However my friend, who I hadn’t seen in six months, invited me to go see it with her. Can I say I can never thank her enough for taking me. I was very happy with the plot of the movie, the characters, even the ending to the movie wasn’t all that bad. According to Wikipedia, “Logan” is a 2017 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman.
“Logan” takes place in the year 2029. Mutants are on the brink of extinction, and no new mutants have been born/ created in the past few years. According to Wikipedia, “James "Logan" Howlett,” formerly known as Wolverine, spends his days working as a chauffeur in Texas. His healing factor has faltered and, as a result, his body has aged greatly. Logan lives with mutant tracker Caliban in an abandoned building across the Mexican border, where they care for Professor Charles Xavier, who is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease which causes him to lose control of his telepathic abilities to devastating effect.” One day, Logan meets a woman named Gabriela Lopez, who is a nurse for a corporation, Alkali-Transigen, who wants him to escort her and an 11-year-old girl named Laura to a place in North Dakota that they call "Eden.” In the beginning of the movie, I grew rather bored. It might have had to do with the fact that I haven't seen any previous movies, or knew any background to the movie prior to watching it. I continuously kept checking the time, anxious for another “boring superhero movie” to be over with. After about 30 minutes of watching, I actually started getting interested in the story when Laura/X-23, entered the plot. Right from the beginning, I was amazed by the performance Dafne Keen produced. She reminded me of the character Eleven from Stranger Things. She had a hardcore yet innocent vibe to her. After that it was a lot easier for me to follow the plot and understand more who was who. Surprisingly, this movie had a lot of gore. I heard from friends who saw other superhero movies that there wasn’t really a bunch of bloody gore. Usually it is just violence and fights that are seen, so occasionally I needed to turn my head in order to avoid seeing blood. This is a heads up for those of you that are queasy when you see blood. Overall I give the movie a ⅘ stars, because even though it had a lot of gore that made me uncomfortable at times, the storyline and execution the actors gave was phenomenal.
