“Runners take your mark.” “Set.” A gun is fired. The runners begin their 1600 meter race. One young talented high school boy starts off at a steady pace right behind the first several who are in the very front. He maintains that pace for the first, second and third lap around the track. On the last lap he speeds up. He passes the person in eighth place, then seventh, sixth and fifth. On the last 100 meters he passes everyone and gets first place.

Check out a recap of what some of the coaches and athletes from Imagine Prep thought about their respective sport seasons during the 2016-2017 school year. Staff writer Rachel Jones
Six wins. That’s all it takes for Imagine Preps high school varsity soccer team to make playoffs this year. So far the team has won four games and lost four. The team is doing well on so many things. However there’s plenty of things they need to work on in order to meet the goals they have set. Ms. Michelle Meunier, the head coach of the soccer team gave some insight as to what she thinks of the season so far and whether or not the team is reaching the goals she has set for them. “I think the team is on the right track toward the goals that we set up at the beginning of the year. However there have been some bumps in the road,” Meunier said. “Our first game went really well but we started slow and that kinda bit us in the second game. We thought we were in shape and ready to go but the other team ran circles around us so we have a lot of conditioning we need to do to be ready for the rest of the season and hopefully that will help us reach our goals.” Staff writer Kiersten Moss
Softball is a well-known sport and is considered to be one of the biggest sports played in the United States. A total of 30 million people in the United States play the sport according to the United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association, but 15 of those people play on Imagine Prep’s Varsity Softball team. IPS’ softball team has been around for three seasons, and gotten into the championships the past two years, but they have yet to win either of them. Staff writer Autumn Froitland
April is hands down my favorite month because April means NHL Playoffs. Growing up in Arizona, the Coyotes are my favorite team, but I am a lover of all things hockey so even if the Coyotes aren’t playing, I’m still watching all the games. Every year around this time, the league heats up. Teams fighting and playing their hardest for a position in the playoffs, and this year is no exception. Staff writer Vitoria Silveira Garcia
This is the first year Imagine Prep Surprise has had a baseball team . The team has 13 students participating, and so far the season is not going as well as expected. One of the baseball players is junior, Anthony Mentivio. He has some experience playing baseball before for fun. Mentivio likes to play together as a team during the games. Some of Mentivio’s favorites things about the sport is to play the hardest he can to try to win and when he goes 3 for 3 at the plates. Staff writer Autumn Froitland The weather is heating up, people are trading in their boots for sandals and the traffic is absolutely crazy; that could only mean one thing...Spring Training. Here in Surprise, Arizona we are famous for our city of Surprise stadium that Major League Baseball players use for practice during spring training. Because of how popular spring training is, a lot of people from out of state populate the city from early January to mid April. Imagine Prep student, Linsey Lythgoe loves all things baseball and couldn’t be more excited for Spring Training to start and is also aware of how it affects the community. “So pretty much what changes is how busy it gets, especially near the stadium, if you live near the stadium it’s going to get like four times busier. So that’s probably the main problem with Spring Training,” Lythgoe said. Staff writer Rachel Jones

Everyone was excited and on-edge, praying that their team would win. It was an intense game that ended very close. When the National Hockey League announced that Arizona would be getting a new hockey team, people were shocked. The idea of having hockey in the desert was a joke, nobody could imagine what that would even look like. Now, 20 years later, they are still here. They may not be the best team in the league but they have shown everyone that the valley heat and the frozen ice fit together perfectly. The 2016-2017 season is a big one for the Arizona Coyotes, this season is the 20th anniversary of when the NHL team made their debut in our very own Phoenix, Ariz. |
